CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Naoki Kashima
AGE: 17
CANON: Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne
CANON POINT: After defeating Chiaki, before fighting Kagutsuchi, without completing the Amala Labyrinth
HISTORY: As of now, your will to live shall be sustained. Believe in it...and live.
PERSONALITY:
Cautious: At the start of the game, Naoki is very much naïve and a bit gullible, easily tricked or convinced into doing what other people want. He stays that way for most of the game, being used by both Hijiri and Isamu, and helping Takao despite the fact that he'd rather remake the old world than create a new one. He puts up with a lot of horrible treatment from his friends before they finally go too far; Isamu when he decides to make a world where everyone can be alone and sacrifices Hijiri to summon his god, and Chiaki when she seeks to make a world of the strong and murders all the Manikins in pursuit of it. By the end of the game, he's refused everyone's goal but his own, and is much more cautious about letting people order him around, even if he is still willing to help people with little things.
Forgiving/cooperative: Even after everything his friends do, Naoki remains fairly trusting and forgiving. When he remakes the new world, he brings back Takao, Isamu, and Chiaki, and goes back to being close friends with them. Any suspicions he has, he keeps to himself, and he's willing to go along with things he doesn't like or agree with up until the point it hits a line he won't cross, leading him to go from 'sure, I'll do that for you' to 'absolutely not' fairly quickly.
Determined/Brave: While he doesn't talk much about his convictions, he holds to them and has a great amount of determination. In the Freedom ending path, Naoki only succeeds in remaking the old world because he has no doubts in what he's doing, and isn't afraid of himself, the world around him, demons, or failure. In a path where he doesn't choose a reason and is 'fearful', instead of remaking the old world, the Vortex world simply continues to exist, with no new world ever able to be born in its place.
Adaptable: Naoki does pretty well for someone flung into the end of the world and abandoned by all his friends. He doesn't have much difficulty accepting his new reality and learning to negotiate/make friends with demons. The first Magatama is forced on him, but soon enough Naoki is willingly ingesting them and using their power to pursue his goal.
Kind and polite: Naoki can occasionally make a witty or cutting remark when he wants, but when given the option he usually chooses to say or do the kind thing. After saving Ms. Takao, she expresses that she helped end the world because it was full of selfish people, and that people were just putting up with life rather than being determined to improve. That she specifically chose to save Naoki indicates that he was the kind of helpful, responsible person she wanted in the new world. Isamu expresses unhappiness with Naoki being excessively well behaved at one point.
In denial: For the most part Naoki accepts what happens around him, but he hasn't quite adjusted to the changes that were inflicted upon him. Even as he ingests more Magatama to enhance his demonic powers, Naoki still views himself as a human. Even when specifically asked if he's a demon, he denies it, and will be vague when people ask about his appearance/what happened to him. It was easier for him to deal with in the Vortex World, but in a place with more than 5 actual humans, he'll have more difficulties with his appearance. Especially after spending so much of his life doing his best to fit in and conform with society aside from his little hobby of occult material.
Jumpy: Naoki has spent an indeterminate amount of time (there's no day night cycle) in the vortex world, where the vast majority of the time he has to worry about fighting for his life and demons willing to kill him waiting around every corner. Nocturne is not the kind of game where the regular enemies you run into onto the way of the boss are just there to eat up resources, for a large portion of the game they can and will pose a lethal threat until you heavily out level them. As a result he's going to outwardly do pretty well with his surroundings, but on the inside he's ready for the next attack.
POWERS AND ABILITIES:
1. Demon body. Naoki's body has been turned into that of a demon. He is more agile, and capable of speeds at the height of human capability with agility and reaction times beyond what a human could manage, and far stronger. He could toss people around easy and is strong enough to go toe to toe with even powerful giants and gods. Because his body is so hard and durable it makes a very effective weapon in combat. Due to the exceptional durability of his demonic body, Naoki will eventually fully recover from anything that doesn't outright kill or horrifically maim him. He is resistant to but still affected by poisons, mind affecting magic and other status-effect type things. He does still need to rest, and demons do still eat and drink, but the game depicts it more as something demons do for enjoyment than out of necessity.
2. Magic. Naoki has some spell casting ability, and a pool of mana to cast it with; he can use elemental magic (Fire, Ice, Lightning, Wind/Force. Earth, Water, other elemental type things that are not in the game he has no ability to use and has a harder time dealing with attacks in those elements). Naoki can do these with both single target or small area spells (2-7 people standing loosely together type area rather than blow up several houses type area effect. I'm looking at you, fireball). He also has some small healing abilities and support abilities, like using magic to enhance his physical damage.
There's one ability that is completely unique to Naoki in his game, and in another where he appears as an opt, a very damaging single-target almighty-type (bypasses resistances/immunities) attack that deals damage to Naoki when he uses it. It's the kind of thing that only gets used in desperate situations due to its high cost. In theory he could use it 5 times in a row, but that would leave him very, very close to death. Only a very strong healer would be able to keep up with the self-inflicted damage.
3. Demon Summoning. Game limitations on dimensional travel mean Naoki will be cut off from anything he could summon before. Nothing he summons is obligated to listen to him, since the way it works in Nocturne is built around negotiating/sparing demons from death in exchange for service. There are a limited number of beings he can have a summoning agreement with at one time.
I would like for this to be a permission based thing in Ravnica, with Naoki able to negotiate summoning with other players' permission with suitably magical/mythical beings, and potentially with a few NPCs under mod approval. It's not something Naoki would do right at the start since he's more interested in finding a way to leave than he is in getting allies, but if things get difficult, it's something he'll consider.
4. CW: Body Horror: Magatama. Naoki got his powers by having a weird demon insect forced into his body through his face. Through out the game he gets more power by ingesting more of them. There's at least one literal demon insect living inside his body. Sometimes after a fight they get excited and thrash around.
INVENTORY: Naoki arrives wearing only pants, underwear, socks, and shoes. All of which he has walked through sewers, deserts, and almost literal hell in. He has a small assortment of valuable gems, some useless demon currency, and his collection of demonic insects.
GUILD CHOICE: Guildless
REASONING: Having just come off an ordeal where he had to kill his friend to end their Reasons, he's not going to be interested in joining any group whose goals he doesn't really understand. At the start of the game Naoki might have been the type to accept whichever guild he was told to go to, but by the end he's been used too much and won't just agree to be put into a group he doesn't understand. He just got done ending a giant world-spanning power struggle between several groups that required him to kill his two best friends. He doesn't want to be part of a new one. But he may agree to joining one later on once he's had a chance to calm down and learn more.

[There is a simple but clear drawing of a cylinder made of three segments stacked on top of one another with rows of little symbols on them that mostly seem to be pair of vertical lines on them connected either in the middle, top, or just sitting close together. Naoki is neither a terrible artist nor exceptionally talented, but he took his time and it's not a rushed sketch.]
Has anyone seen one of these before, or heard of the spinning drum of Amala, or seen anything like this?
Before I came here, someone told me there were other worlds, connected by Amala. It wasn't important at the time, but now that I'm here, it might be helpful.
